SMART forms new custom solutions group
SMART’s core hardware and software to be tailored for custom applications
CALGARY, Alberta --- June 9, 2005 --- SMART Technologies Inc. announces its new Custom Solutions group, a business unit that will use SMART’s research and development expertise to produce customized products to suit specific customer needs. A dedicated team of SMART engineers, designers and software developers will create nonstandard sizes of existing products as well as specialized surfaces and modified installation hardware upon customer request. They will also work with customers worldwide to develop new applications of SMART’s DViT™ (digital vision touch) technology.
SMART has delivered a number of customized projects, including the Georgia Institute of Technology’s (Georgia Tech’s) 17' x 5' (5.2 m x 1.5 m) interactive whiteboard, which integrates SMART’s DViT technology with Georgia Tech’s application of virtual rear projection to make the large display touch sensitive. SMART also developed a unique touch podium for Queen’s University, which is an adapted SMART Board™ for Flat-Panel Displays interactive whiteboard that is attached to an adapted mechanical arm.
"We needed a very large, touch-sensitive display for our research on virtual rear projection, but could not find one that suited our requirements until we spoke to SMART," says Gregory Abowd, associate professor, College of Computing, Georgia Tech. "SMART’s engineers understood what we wanted and used the company’s touch technology to create an interactive whiteboard that completely met our needs."
"SMART’s product line has been built upon innovations that address customer needs and by advancing our expertise in interactive technologies," says David Martin, SMART's chairman and co-CEO. "The creation of the Customs Solutions group formalizes our commitment to providing that expertise to applications across various industries and environments."
